12 May 2011 David Thornton Adds the Final Touches for Weston Contest

For the second time this year, David Thornton has visited Coalville for a special guest conductor session to help develop the band and offer his vast experience to add the final touches to the test piece for the Weston Super Mare contest on Sunday 22nd May 2011.

The practice was great fun with a focused approach, with lots of useful advice and tips to improve the performance of both individuals and band alike.

David will also be helping the band in the run up to the National Brass Band Championships in September.

08 May 2011 NEMBBA Slow Melody Contest

Many of the junior members of the band attended the North East Midlands Brass Band Association contest at the Post Mill Centre in South Normanton.

The competitors included James Raine, Hannah Capstack, Thomas Barham, Abigail Barham, Harry Lear, Bethan Brown, Marina Slee and Frances Gallimore.

In the prizes were Harry Lear - 1st place in Class 2 - Years 11, 12, 13 & 14 Slow Melody, Harry Lear and Bethan Brown - 3rd in 14 years and under duet, 3rd place for the 14 Years and under Hymn Tune Quartet and finally Abigail Barham, for the youngest player of the competition, at 7 years old.

17 Apr 2011 Leicestershire Association -Spring Festival - Groby

Many of the training and senior band attended the Leicestershire Association Junior and Senior Solo, Duet and Quartet Contest held at Groby College on Sunday 17th April 2011.

With nearly 200 entries on the day across 11 sections, it certainly was a very long day and many hours to sit and wait nervously to perform. The band was represented by the following players:

Hannah Capstack, Thomas Barham (2 Sections), Rebecca Allin, Abigail Barham, Harry Lear (4 sections!), Bethan Brown (3 Sections), Marina Slee (2 Sections), Steve Barham (2 Sections), Nick Lear (2 Sections), Graham Jacklin, Eve Gallimore, James Raine (2 Sections).

In the prizes were Harry Lear - 2nd in Junior Air Varie, Bethan Brown - 3rd in 11-14 years slow melody, Steve Barham - 3rd in open slow melody and 3rd in open air varie.

26 Mar 2011 FA Vase Semi Final Coalville Town v Kings Lynn

The band were invited to provide the pre match entertainment at the FA Vase Semi Final 1st leg match between Coalville Town and Kings Lynn.

Coalville Town played well and won the match 3 -0. A trip to Wembley for the final awaits them if they can maintain their lead after the 2nd leg. The band are quietly hopeful that they can perhaps play a part on finals day at Wembley stadium. We will have to wait and see.

Principal cornet, Nick Lear, also welcomed the players with a rendition of the traditional Leicestershire Posthorn Gallop.

13 Mar 2011 1st Section Promotion Guaranteed Following Midlands Area

Sunday 13th March turned out to be a triple success for the band at the Midlands Area 2nd Section Brass Band Championships.

Following a musical and emotiontionally charged performance of Resurgam playing of No. 6 out of a field of 11, the band were announced as winners.  An invitation to the National Finals was secured as well as the first place.  And, the band secured promotion to the First Section (the footballing equivalent of The Championship division) for the first time in the Band's 40 year history. 20 Feb 2011 NEMBBA Contest - Rolls Royce Derby

The band attended the local NEMBBA brass band contest at Rolls Royce on Sunday 20th February.

Although there was only Bakewell and ourselves competing in the 2nd Section competition, the band comfortably secured 1st place, with the adjudicators, Barry Thompson and Kevin Wadsworth, awarding 4 clear points from 2nd place. Solo Horn player, Sue Blankley was awarded the 'Best Horn' of the 1st and 2nd section. Also Solo Euphonium player, Steve Barham, was awarded the 'Best Euphonium' of the 1st and 2nd section too.

22 Jan 2011 Butlins Mineworkers Contest

The band have started the contest year of well with a credible 7th position at the Butlins Mineworkers 2nd Section contest held in Skegness. The national competition included a field of 16 bands from around the UK.
